I don’t wanna gang up on the reviewer since he did his best, expressed his opinion, and provided plenty of good data in my all time favorite TV series. That being said, I rate this episode a 9/10 and absolutely love Hunnicutts performance. I guess what’s one person’s trash is another’s gold. It’s just a terrific heartwarming tale in a time where heart can’t be taken for granted Sam Draculahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10862299666673255766noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-70435920091159697482020-03-21T18:38:59.458-05:002020-03-21T18:38:59.458-05:00Who was Rip the dog? The Hunt is in my top 3 TZ episodes, you have to watch the first few minutes to understand and get the deep relationship between Hyder and Rachel, it sets the tone for the rest of the story. They're extremely poor simple country folk, living off the land in a small cabin but "they have endured " and clearly love one another. Hyders encounters on eternity road are well done and in the end he's still thinking of Rachel. It rates a "A" with me.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06248701762211544559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-72272997515201882112018-11-16T16:45:20.799-06:002018-11-16T16:45:20.799-06:00I don't doubt that R-I-P was one intended mean...I don't doubt that R-I-P was one intended meaning, but I interpreted the dog's name as an allusion to Rip Van Winkle. If you recall Washington Irving's tale, Rip went hunting with his dog, fell asleep on the mountain, and woke up 20 years later to find that nobody in his town recognized him. Similar to what happens to Hyder in the episode.Michael De Sapiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03971364262671562750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-847311892457964192018-10-13T01:53:03.399-05:002018-10-13T01:53:03.399-05:00I can definitely appreciate your admiration for th...I can definitely appreciate your admiration for this one and I have wondered several times since I wrote this review almost two years ago if I was too harsh on it. After seeing it again recently I'll stand by the review. I find this episode never really gains its momentum. While Hamner's script also has a fair share of flaws the narrative seems to move at more of a natural pace and the characters feel a bit more relatable and at home in their folksy personalities. Hamner's hour-long script for the fourth season, "Jess-Belle," seems to capture the nuances of his writing and the personalities of his rural characters far better than this episode. But I realize many people are fond of this episode and I hope my criticism of it isn't overly harsh. The first 5 minutes when Hyder and Rachel are in their small cabin sets the mood for the rest of the episode. These are simple country folk who've been together for close to 50yrs, they're still deeply in love with each other as the dialog and acting convey. I think Hunnicutt is perfect for the role as Hyder, after he awakens by the pond he's confused by what he encounters with the neighbors and with Rachel. He doesn't realize hes dead until he meets the devils angel and they talk about what happened the night before. The pace is fine, the story plays out as it should. It's an A+ in my book.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06248701762211544559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-65066877987397258952017-02-01T16:59:20.257-06:002017-02-01T16:59:20.257-06:00That's true, Hal. I know a lot of fans have a soft spot for this one so I hope I wasn't too harsh on it. It has a lot of heart but overall I think it falls short in a lot of places. It never dawned on me that the dog's name is R-I-P. Not sure if it was intentional but it sounds like something Hamner would have done. Thanks for pointing that out. I think the following for The Hunt is among dog lovers, mainly. Despite its flaws, the devotion between Hyder and Rip resonates. Given the story, though, it may be a little too cute to name the dog R-I-P though. :)Halhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09291930694234773688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-88469544244573266852017-01-26T13:35:29.003-06:002017-01-26T13:35:29.003-06:00I hear you, Jack. Reviewing this one did convince me to give Jess-Belle" another chance though, and I loved it. Probably one of the best of the hour-long episodes.
