In view of its overall excellence, I can easily forgive the predictable ending. I enjoy all the "otherworldly" elements, particularly the alien-esque music by Jacques Lasry, and the unusual sound the car makes!
Just watched again after having not seen it for a few years, so it was nice and fresh for me, but will treat myself to a another viewing tomorrow - just to re-absorb all those magical quirky touches. I think the strength of this episode is found in the very "human" mannerisms of the characters and how they deal with this totally absurd thing that they doing. Matheson's story focused more on the characters and their anxieties and I think Serling's adaptation captures this pretty well. Basically, I'm saying that I appreciate this one more after several viewings. The basic plot is flimsy but the performances and especially the direction is really impressive. The original story is really more of a sketch than a fully fleshed out story. Bare brought a strange style to the episode but a pleasing one and it fits well with the experimental flavor of the first season. It is interesting to consider the designers of The Outer Limits being influenced by the Zone. The Outer Limits is the only other episode that generates that same feeling of strangeness for me that the Zone does. It is a vast improvement over the short story (thanks to Serling), which contains little of the character dynamic or dystopian flavor of the adaptation. Not to mention that wonderful camera work. The acting was well above average even for a Twilight Zone(!) This time I noticed a fleeting similarity in the off-kilter feel of the episode, the futuristic art direction (though not too obvious) and ambiance generally to the second season Outer Limits entry, The Duplicate Man, which it otherwise isn't like at all, but my sense is that whoever directed and designed the TOL ep was familiar with Third From The Sun.john kenrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00710666533854296630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-38052793017388124812016-04-02T16:52:01.664-05:002016-04-02T16:52:01.664-05:00A big thank you for reading, and for letting us kn...A big thank you for reading, and for letting us know you enjoy the work. This site has excellent reviews and histories regarding the show. I visit here often. "Third From The Sun" is a wonderful episode. As I've viewed it again recently it's improved and I'm now inclined to agree that it's a cleverly made above average early entry from the first season. john kenrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00710666533854296630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-71050546165569875222011-11-29T11:41:49.293-06:002011-11-29T11:41:49.293-06:00Thank for the kind words Matthew. And yes, I would absolutely recommend RICHARD MATHESON ON SCREEN as the definitive reference guide for anyone wanting to know anything about his work in film and television. It’s a fantastic book. Thanks for checking out our blog!

Note:
I also recently reread Mr. Bradley’s introduction to NOIR which is an omnibus of Matheson’s early crime novels that was released by G&G books in 1997 (with a paperback edition released by FORGE in 2005). It contains a lot of information about Matheson’s early years as a writer including his history with the Fictioneers. I would definitely check it out.JPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14808904189056290207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318310043864039191.post-37764534152027209192011-11-27T10:24:45.620-06:002011-11-27T10:24:45.620-06:00Thanks for this excellent rundown, and especially ...Thanks for this excellent rundown, and especially for mentioning our RICHARD MATHESON COMPANION.
